The Peri-Peri Chilli, also known as Piri-Piri, Pili Pili, or African Bird’s Eye Chilli, is a fiery Capsicum frutescens variety strongly associated with Portuguese and Southern African cuisine. Originally developed in Southeastern Africa, the name “Peri-Peri” translates to “pepper pepper” in Swahili.
It produces small slender pods that ripen from black to bright red and delivers a fast-hitting heat typically ranging between 50,000 and 175,000 Scoville Heat Units. The burn develops quickly and fades faster than many hotter chilli varieties, making it intense but balanced.
The flavour profile is bright, fruity, slightly earthy, and highly aromatic. Peri-Peri chillies are most famous for being blended with garlic, lemon juice, vinegar, herbs, and oil to create traditional Peri-Peri sauce used on flame-grilled chicken, seafood, marinades, dipping sauces, and BBQ dishes.
