The Rocoto Manzano Yellow is a traditional heirloom Capsicum pubescens variety originating from the Andean regions of Peru and Bolivia. Completely different from modern superhot chillies, it is prized for its juicy thick flesh, crisp texture, and unique botanical traits rather than extreme capsaicin levels.
Pods are round and apple-shaped — “Manzano” meaning “apple” in Spanish — and ripen from green to a vibrant golden-yellow colour. The plants are easily recognised by their fuzzy hairy leaves, striking purple flowers, and unusual jet-black seeds, which are unique among chilli species.
Heat levels commonly range between 30,000 and 100,000 Scoville Heat Units, delivering a clean upfront burn that fades much faster than most Capsicum chinense superhots. The flavour profile is sweet, fruity, crisp, and highly aromatic with a juicy texture often compared to green apple or bell pepper.
Due to their thick juicy flesh, Rocoto Manzano Yellow chillies are especially popular for stuffing, roasting, fresh salsas, sauces, and traditional South American dishes such as Rocoto Relleno. Unlike many chilli varieties, Rocotos thrive in cooler climates and can tolerate conditions that would severely stress most superhot peppers.
